ETIAS: the new electronic permit
Starting mid-2026, citizens of countries that currently don't need a visa (such as Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru and more) will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before traveling to the Schengen area.
What is ETIAS?
It's an electronic travel authorization similar to the US ESTA. You apply online, it costs €7 and is valid for 3 years.
How to get it
- Go to the official ETIAS website.
- Fill out the form with your valid passport.
- Pay the fee by card.
- Receive the authorization by email (usually within minutes).
Valid passport
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your departure date from the Schengen area.
Travel insurance
Although not mandatory for all countries, it's highly recommended. Some countries may ask for proof of insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000.
Round-trip ticket
The airline and immigration may ask for proof of return. Have it printed or on your phone.
Important: ETIAS is not a visa. It only authorizes you to travel; the final entry decision is made by the border officer.
